PROCESS PIPING REHABILITATION

Problem

A refinery in Tula, Hidalgo Mexico located a pinhole leak on a 3.5” OD steel pipe.

Conditions

The pipe is pressurized at 30 psi (2 bar), carrying water and oily condensate at 122°F (50°C), and cannot be shut down for repair.

Solution

The refinery simply used one Syntho-Glass®UP415 Kit to repair the leak. After preparing the surface using the included sanding cloth and solvent cleaning wipe, Syntho-SteelTM load transfer putty was applied to seal the leak and was held in place using Pressure Sealing Rubber Tape. Eight layers of Syntho-Glass® was then applied to strengthen the pipe and rebuild the pipe wall back to MAOP.

Result

The repair was completed in less than 30 minutes without the need to shutdown, saving precious time and money.
