HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING
Problem
A water project in South Dakota had thirty-six bell and spigot field joints on this large diameter ductile iron line. The challenge was to provide a reliable coating at the joints that would survive a directional bore under a river crossing. Boring damage during pull though can create integrity issues with the field joint coating and an inaccessible line such this is an unacceptable scenario.
Conditions
Crews faced numerous challenges, including boring a 1,200 foot channel below the river in extremely muddy conditions for the new 36" OD line which was shop coated with Pritec®, a popular Bredero Shaw coating made with a butyl rubber adhesive.
Solution
The joints were coated with a primer then a high recovery sleeve manufactured by Canusa, a Shawcor company, prior to wrapping with Syntho-Sleeve. After applying the Canusa shrink sleeve, the crew applied 12 layers of Syntho-Sleeve® Outer Wrap which provided mechanical protection against abrasion during pull through. Both the Canusa Sleeve and Syntho-Sleeve Outer Wrap were quickly hand applied and the fast cure of the Syntho-Sleeve resin system kept the job rolling.
Result
Syntho-Sleeve provided the added protection to ensure a 100% protected pipe and a successful job. The Syntho-Sleeve System survived the pull-back fully intact.
