NRI was recently requested to take part in a testing program for a large pipeline company in northern Africa utilizing the Syntho-Glass® XT composite pipe repair system. The test was being simulated to represent a large corrosion defect in the pipeline and tested to insure NRI’s composite pipe repair solutions would repair the defect to higher than the original pressure rating of the pipe. The pipe was chosen from stock pipe in the customer’s yard, and a defect was ground into the wall thickness by hand grinder. The remaining wall thickness was then measured and confirmed to be the desired remaining thickness to represent an 80% wall loss scenario.
The repair was designed to return the pipe to greater than the original burst pressure of the pipe, and was then applied at the required thickness. The burst test was commenced until a failure occurred. The pipe ruptured outside of the repair area at a pressure that was greater than could be measured by the gauges available on-site, in fact, the pressure gauge used was destroyed by the high pressure it experienced during the process. The end result was more than satisfactory for the customer and NRI’s Syntho-Glass® XT has been approved for use on their high pressure, large diameter, transmission pipeline systems.
